Rabat was founded by And Al-Mumin almohade in 1150. It was built by the site of an ancient Phoenix and Roman colony. Its old name, Ra Ribat Al – Fath, came from a pre-existent entrenched field and was going to be fortified by Abu Yussuf Ya'qub al-Mansur caliph.
Thanks to Marinidi dynasty, Rabat partly declined in favour of Salé. After the fall of Andalusia, in 1492, Rabat noticed a strong immigration of Moriscos Andalusians who were able to unify the two cities (Rabat and Salé) in one barbaric republic. In 1666, the new Alauiti dynasty conquered Rabat and it became one of the main site of their sultan government.
Rabat is the administrative chief town of Morocco since 1912 and it is remained the same also after the indipendence of the country, on March 1956.
Rabat is situated on the Atlantic coast, in the mouths of Bou Regret river. It hosts one of the most important universities of the country, Mohamme V university. It keeps an European quarter with large gardens and villas. All this is situated on the area next to the medina, the ancient city. Rabat is also considered a trading point centre with few industrial activities. The offer of services and the location near the Ocean are the elements that consider Rabat one of the city that a tourist must visit during its stay in Morocco.
